DeKoven Center Responds to Episcopal Church Archives Relocation Decision

RACINE, WI — On June 25, 2025, the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church voted to relocate the Episcopal Church Archives to a closed church site in Atlanta, Georgia. This decision comes after three and a half years of intensive collaboration and planning between representatives of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) and The DeKoven Center in Racine, Wisconsin.

The DeKoven Center had been widely expected to host the new home for the Archives. Over the past several years, the Center engaged in extensive feasibility studies, architectural design, legal coordination, and engineering consultations to prepare a site tailored to the Archives’ needs. Understandably, the decision not to proceed with the DeKoven proposal comes as a deep disappointment.

Adding to that disappointment is a statement released by Episcopal News Service, quoting concerns about the DeKoven site’s cost, expansion potential, and lack of direct ownership by the Church.

“We concluded that [the DeKoven Center] site was too expensive, did not have room to grow and would not have been owned and controlled by the church since occupancy would have been subject to a long-term lease,” the ENS reported.

Regrettably, this description does not fully align with the DeKoven Center’s experience. The original proposal more than doubled the current archival capacity, with assurances for additional campus space and flexible, cost-conscious buildout options. At no time did DFMS express a requirement for ownership.

While disappointed, The DeKoven Center acknowledges the importance of the Episcopal Church Archives securing a permanent home and offers congratulations on this milestone. However, the Center laments that the Archives will not benefit from the unique offerings of The DeKoven campus—tranquil surroundings, historic Episcopal character, spiritual and missional alignment, and a deeply rooted tradition of hospitality.

The Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church has personally expressed appreciation to DeKoven Board President, the Rev. Geoffrey Ward, for the Center’s efforts and commitment throughout this process. In response, Fr. Ward has extended an invitation for Bishop Rowe to visit the campus, experience its atmosphere firsthand, and explore other potential partnerships between the Church and The DeKoven Center.

“This decision does not mark an end, but a redirection,” said Fr. Ward. “Over our 177-year history, The DeKoven Center has known both disappointment and profound renewal. We remain committed to our mission and look forward to new opportunities for service and growth.”

The DeKoven Center continues to thrive as a missional presence to the surrounding community and place of spiritual refreshment and renewal for people across the country. It is capably supported by a dedicated leadership team, a growing number of Episcopal archival partnerships, and a vibrant clientele that values the unique experience the campus provides.
